Getting started with Pilates

You first need to have a qualified instructor. Since you will be part of a group, you will need to ensure that the group is at your level so that you can build up the difficulty slowly with the entire group.

There are varieties of ways to practice Pilates. Pilates can be performed on a reformer, a mat or any other pilates apparatus. A Pilates reformer is a specialized bed-like apparatus with a moving carriage, resistance springs, a foot bar, and straps that you can use to perform the workouts. Alternatively, you can perform Pilates exercises on the floor using a mat.

With a reformer, you can keep steady and align your body easier on each movement than on a mat. The straps and moving structure make it easier to perform various movements. With a mat, it's a lot trickier, especially if you're just getting into Pilates.

Freeform Pilates on a mat also has its upside. Without the restrictions of the reformer, you can perform a wider variety of exercises and movements while also being free to get a slightly heavier set in without worrying about weight resistance.

Pilates workouts

Pilates exercises focus on core activation and strengthening your entire musculature to correct imbalances. It's easy to get familiar with the movements, build on them, and keep challenging yourself. You might feel a nice burn after your first days, but afterward, you learn to look forward to the energized feeling after each session. Some of the Pilates exercises you might perform include;

  • The roll-up

  • Leg circles

  • Single-leg stretch

  • Teaser

  • Spine twist

  • Corkscrew

  • Series of 5

  • The hundred

  • Leg circles
